Team Winner's Edge

wayne scottWinners Edge has been sponsoring riders since the shop opened its doors in 1992. Paulo and Greg have always wanted to support other riders in reaching their goals in their sport. This developed over the years with the 2008 Team now comprising of 24 riders some of whom have been with the Team for over 10 years.

The Team has riders who started with Winners Edge and went on to compete at the top level of amateur cycling and triathlon and even into the professional ranks. Elliot Hubbard, Kris Hedges and now Tyler Butterfield all raced in European teams. Flora Duffy competed on the ITU World Cup Triathlon circuit and qualified for the Olympic Games for 2008 in Beijing. Elliot Hubbard and Tyler Butterfield are both former Olympians and all of these athletes as well as Julia Hawley, Karen Smith, Steve Millington and Kent Richardson have competed in the Commonwealth Games and/or Pan-Am Games, as well as World Championships, with Tyler Butterfield winning a bronze medal in the Junior World Triathlon Championships.Tyler will always be regarded as a part of Winners Edge even though since 2009 he has been generously sponsored by Team Tokio as he works to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Karen Smith, a top local triathlete in addition to being a Commonwealth Games triathlete and qualified for the Hawaii Ironman in 2007 finishing 6th in her age category in a creditable time of 10 hours 38 minutes. Duncan Simons has been on the Team since he started working at the Winners Edge when he was 14 years old and is credited with starting the present highly successful mountain bike race series.

Somewhat older in the tooth, Veteran Greg Hopkins is a former top triathlete on the international and local scene and is a former Bermuda Grand Prix winner, May 24th winner and multi Cycling and Triathlon National Champion. Wayne Scott is a former Florida State Cycling Champion and has represented Bermuda at World B Championships in China and Europe as well as a number of Caribbean Championships.

Paulo Medeiros has a number of local Championship wins in the Veterans mountain bike racing, as do Clive Hook and Linda Down on the Road scene.

Newcomers for 2008 are Kym Burns who is a keen rider who will plans a more competitive year ahead and who overseas the Teams strength training throughout the winter months at the Athletic Club a co-sponsor of the Team. Finally Karen Bordage will wear the Winners Edge colors in 2008. An accomplished athlete nicknamed ‘Pit-Bull’ for her tenacity, primarily a triathlete she qualified for and competed in the 2007 Hawaii Ironman. (Glen Franklin and Darren Glasford joined the team in October 2008) The Teams latest and final addition for the 2009 season is Mark Hatherley who despite only having ridden for a few years has stamped his mark (no pun intended) on the local cycling scene. As has Dave Collins.

These are just a few of the major accomplishments of some of the Team riders; however there is as much emphasis in the team on helping develop the interest of Junior riders. Both Philip Woolridge and Thomas Godfrey has already tasted international competition representing Bermuda at the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships, and Justin Ferreira whose father Marcelino is also a long time Team rider and co-sponsor of the Winners Edge Team is already touted as an athlete to watch for the future, with fellow youngster Mark Godfrey and Nakeno Creighton also shining on the local scene.

The final additions to the Team are sisters Izabella and Gabriella Arnold both avid multi sport athletes on the junior scene.
